Two questions increasingly discussed in the scientific literature: how to support cognitive function with age, and how to slow cellular aging.
The three peptides in this box are studied on three levels: the brain (Semax), the mitochondria (SS-31), and the telomeres (Epithalon). Each in its own direction, yet all three tied to a single theme — the biology of aging.
A Russian nootropic peptide developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Semax is a synthetic analogue of the ACTH (4–10) fragment, extended with the Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide for greater stability.
Semax is studied for its capacity to influence memory, concentration, and resilience to stress. Studies note its potential to raise levels of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) — a neurotrophic factor often called "fertilizer for the brain." BDNF is linked to neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to form new neural connections [1].
In studies by Eremin K.O. et al., activation of the brain's dopaminergic and serotonergic systems was observed with the administration of Semax, which is discussed in the context of cognitive function and mood [2].
BDNF levels decline with age. In the scientific literature this is associated with declines in memory, concentration, and processing speed. Semax is studied as a potential way to support these processes.
SS-31 (Elamipretide) is a next-generation tetrapeptide that works not outside the cell but within it — directly in the mitochondria, where cellular energy is generated and where, in the view of many researchers, the processes of aging begin.
Unlike most peptides, SS-31 does not interact with receptors on the cell surface. It enters the cell and binds to cardiolipin, a key component of the inner mitochondrial membrane. Stabilization of cardiolipin is discussed in the scientific literature as a way to support mitochondrial function [3].
In studies by Szeto H.H. et al., restoration of mitochondrial bioenergetics was observed across various experimental models. SS-31 is one of the first peptides designed specifically for targeted action on the mitochondria [3].
Within this box, SS-31 works at the deepest level — cellular energetics. Where Semax is studied at the level of the brain, SS-31 is studied at the level of each cell.
A legendary longevity peptide developed in Russia by Professor V.Kh. Khavinson. Epithalon (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) is a tetrapeptide studied for its capacity to influence telomerase — an enzyme linked to the lengthening of telomeres.
Telomeres are the protective "caps" on the ends of chromosomes. With each cell division the telomeres shorten. When they become critically short, the cell stops dividing. Telomere length is regarded as one of the markers of biological age.
In studies by Khavinson and colleagues in animal models, an increase in lifespan of 10–25% was observed with the administration of Epithalon. In cell cultures, activation of telomerase and an increase in the number of cell divisions were noted [4].
Within this box, Epithalon complements SS-31 at the level of cellular longevity: SS-31 stabilizes the cell's energetics, while Epithalon is studied for the support of its capacity to divide.
Three components — three levels: the brain, the mitochondria, the telomeres.
| Component | Research focus |
|---|---|
| Semax | Cognitive function: BDNF, neuroplasticity, memory, concentration |
| SS-31 | Cellular energetics: cardiolipin, mitochondrial membranes |
| Epithalon | Cellular longevity: telomerase, telomeres, cell-division potential |
All three peptides are studied in the context of the biology of aging, but on different levels. The box brings them together for researchers interested in a comprehensive approach to cognitive and cellular longevity.
